Dying Lion of Lucerne MonumentPosted by WendyTsang (Hayward, United States) on 28 June 2007 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio. If you see it closely, you will see the pig rock carving on top of the lion. It commemorates the honor and loyalty of the Swiss Guards hired by the French Royalty for protection. When the crowds, during the French Revolution, stormed the palace the Swiss Guards fought to the last man. Little did they know that the French Royalty had quietly slipped out of the palace previously and let these guards die in vain. The monument with its painful expression on the face of the dying lion and lying on a shield with another shield clearly seen in the background with the Swiss cross visible, tells the story extremely well. It is a monument that is hard from which to take ones eyes. Very impressive and very moving. Not to be missed!
